I had never heard of updated.com before, but yesterday they showed up in my stats with 8% of total referrals.

Nice new traffic, but who are they? Anyone else getting a boost from them, or is it just something about our site in particular?

My stats server isn't recognizing them as an SE, so I can't pull much information about the traffic.

Never heard of 'em. How does this work? I get higher placement in their search engine if I post their link? Are there or have there been other websites using this business model? I'd be interested to know if this works.

I have no idea how their program works. I have never signed up with them and am sure that I have not submitted to a site with that name. They just started sending referrals on their own.

Google them along with the term "sucks". A lot of people aren't very happy with them.

I should point out that I've never had any experience with them, either positive or negative.

If one dos a search for "your ip" in a search engine, one get pages that shows the ip address of the visitor. In the serps the bots ip address will show.

I see ips like 66.249.71.70 and 66.249.64.35. Those belong to Goolge Inc, sow this seems to be a meta search of Google.

I get higher placement in their search engine if I post their link? Are there or have there been other websites using this business model? I'd be interested to know if this works.

Gigablast. If your page contains a link to gigablast.com it will rank higher:
[gigablast.com...]

Well, whatever they are, I am leaving out milk and cookies for them. Referrals from them are now up to 10% of total, for the day and a half since they showed up. For my site that's a nice chunk of new revenue...

Little slow.
Not sure why I would want to use it.
Are they marketing it beyond mentioning it forums?

Skier :
By your posts you look a bit old here, but seems you're not getting what is happening.
The people here is accusing you of self-promotion, or shameless promotion for a commercial purpose.

I learned the lesson and now I if I have to ask something about a new site, I would always have to use something like "these guys pretty sucks, who the hell they are?", so I get the sympathies of the dinosaurs here. Otherwise, you'll get accused.

No naive questions are allowed here. Not in the TOS, but sort of jungle law.

I took a look at the search.
I have a question : who the hell are they? :)

I'm trying to determine where they results are comming from but it doesn't seems to be scraping google, yahoo ,msn or gigablast. Neither overture nor kanoodle.

Actually they're results for some keywords I tried are highly imprecise, may they have a real search engine, though it looks quite beta.

I am still getting referrals from that site at a rate far above what it should be. (cumulative 11% now)I still have no idea who or what they are. I can't get any more details from my stats server. Anyone out there have any more information?

As to accusations about me trying to promote my own site - I am not stupid enough to try to launch a new search engine right now. And if I did launch one, I would have a more sophisticated promotion plan than just spamming a forum. I don't see any other promotion going on anywhere.

Are you sure you're stats server isn't just reporting referral spam?

I've seen it in the past where a search engine or site will send out a spider to your site that then goes over your pages and generates a load of hits which look like they have been referred from their own engine/site.

Good suggestion. My stats server doesn't show any web crawlers that could be related to this, but since it doesn't recognise their site as an SE, perhaps it can't identify their bots either. I'll look a little deeper.

They are now running at over 20% of my current referrals and almost 12% cumulative..very odd..wish I knew what was going on here...
