Hi all,

I am new to this realm, I knew about google, yahoo and some other search engines as I use to utilize them for my search purpose. But I am sure there must be more good SEs available, I have a site which is two months old, I will like to register to some free SEs. Will this help to generate some traffic, also will this help to get a good ranking in Google.

Where can I get more information about these free SEs(free for adding my url)?

Thanks in advance

Aji

AjiNIMC,
there are lot of free search engine's out there, but here are some search engines that people know about and search on, I could only divide them into 2 groups.:
1) Search engines that are a little popular but, usually A little less popularity than in ones in List 2, AFAIK

  • LookSmart/Wisenut - [looksmart.com...] , [wisenut.com...]
  • Teoma/AskJeeves - [teoma.com...] , [askjeeves.com...]
  • Gigablast - [gigablast.com...] (provides instant spidering)

    2) Popular search engines (next to Google) that are worth a listing:

  • AltaVista - [altavista.com...]
  • FAST/Alltheweb - [fastsearch.com...] (product info), [alltheweb.com...] (service/showcase)
  • Inktomi - [inktomi.com...] (product info) , [hotbot.com...] (service/showcase)

If you want more information about these/some other search engines, here are some sites to go to:

  • 1) Search engine World (related to WebmasterWorld!): [searchengineworld.com...]

  • 2) Search engine Watch - [searchenginewatch.com...]

  • 3) Search engine Showdown - [searchengineshowdown.com...]

    Hope, all of this helps.

    Sid

(Notice: I don't ment to put other search engines down/say bad things about them in this list so the post was all IMHO)

Sid has given you a good list of search engines, I will attempt to answer your two specific questions.

    Q. will this help to get a good ranking in Google?

    A. No, it will have absolutely no effect on your ranking in Google. Let me suggest that you read a bit about how Google works, start with Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com].

    Q. Will this help to generate some traffic?

    A. Different markets have different search engine preferences, I can only speak for the US market. On my main site 85% of the SE traffic comes from Google and its partners, 10% from MSN (in my case entirely from the Inktomi SE) and I do not really care about where the other 5% comes from.

I agree with Mohamed_E , If you want to get a good ranking in Google, Search engines don't help because remember, Google doesn't crawl the SERPs of other search engines/can't because they are not linked any where, but it does crawl directories which is like a search engine, but sorted into groups and they have only 1 listing per site. So the catogories are pages, which are linked and any directory has a higher PR which also gives you a credit, in your PR.

If you want a good PR is Google, try submitting your site (s) to directories like (some directories require $$$):
    Yahoo - [dir.yahoo.com...]
    DMOZ/ODP - [dmoz.org...]
    LookSmart (directory) - [looksmart.com...]
    Zeal - [zeal.com...]
    GoGuides - [goguides.com...]

these are only some of the popular ones, there are many niches you can submit too, but remember if you have a higher PR , it doesn't mean you're getting that High in the SERPs, you need to have good SEO/content (as Mohamed_E said, try the Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com]) and also have a high PR.

    Yahoo - [dir.yahoo.com...]
    DMOZ/ODP - [dmoz.org<...]

Thanks for all the links but I have doubts
    1) What is the right time to go for Yahoo directory. We are just two months old. As we need to invest some $ so we are very careful. What is chance of getting registered in Yahoo?

    2) We are a commerical site as in we are into a financial service, in short we make money out of our site. Whether our site will get a listing in DMOZ, I registered with DMOZ some two months ago, but yet no reply, not yet added. Actually donot know what happened?

3)How will I know whether I need to register again with DMOZ?Do they contact you in case of rejection.

Thanks and please help me I want to get registered in Yahoo and DMOZ. We are listed in Google, Altavista, alltheweb,gigablast.....

    >> DMOZ

DMOZ will not notify you of accept or rejection. Afaik, they recommend that you submit no earlier than three months after your first attempt, if that should fail for some reason.
