Currently about 97% of my SE related traffic comes from Google/Yahoo, 2% comes from MSN and 1% comes from other miscellaneous engines. I'm terrified that when Yahoo gets rid of Google results or that the next time Google changes their algorithm I'll lose almost all of my traffic. To prepare for this possibility I was wondering if there's any way to actually optimize for the other search engines. In particular MSN as they don't have a PPC/PPI program like the others do. My site is close to 10,000 pages and there's no way I could justify a $25/page inclusion cost or similar system. If there are already any threads regarding this (I couldn't find them) I would be more than happy to read through those if you can post them. If there's not, then I think this would be a good time to start one. Thanks.
97% of traffic from Google/Yahoo sounds like something is not right.
You're missing out on a lot of traffic.
I'd recommend reading the Inktomi threads- this will help your positions in MSN and prepare for the Y! switchover (which may likely be to Ink although things have been changing unsettlingly fast lately).
Check your keyword results in MSN and determine if the results spring from Overture (sponsored), Looksmart (directory results), or Inktomi (web pages). If it's Ink then go use the Inktomi Pure Search tool and check if you are already indexed (chances are great that you are). If you are indexed but not showing up, pick out or create special page/s for Inktomi optimization and do a PFI on it. Many people use and are happy using the positiontech PFI but there is another company as well.
If you aren't in INK, that's a problem. Do the PFI.
If results are Looksmart, then you'll have to join up with them, bummer. They have a great directory but you have to pay for clickthroughs.
- They're actually better than than our results in Google for our three main keywords (which means we've number 1 position in Inktomi for each of them).
But - I REALLY don't know much about Inktomi - are results displayed in the positiontech way - or scrambled up and adapted to suit the different search engines?
Sorry - did not word my question very well! I'm happy with the way our sites appear on PositionTech. My question is this: When/if the Inktomi results appear on Yahoo and other engines - are they displayed in exactly the same format as you see on pure positiontech results...or can search engines modify the results?
G (includes feed to AOL) = 35%
MSN-LS-Ink = 28%
Yahoo with G = 14%
ATW and Lycos = 8%
Yahoo w/o G = 5%
AJ/Teoma = 4%
the others = 6%
From a research point of view ATW and G are the area's too get high serps in / brand awareness.
From a purchasing point of view - i would dare to say i make more money from MSN and Y! w/o G & w G
go figure. Certainly if i don't play MSN and partners (including INK) I see massive drops in enquiries and consequently sales.
Optimising for Inktomi – And how it can help on Other SEs!
