Hello,

I would like to know how can I limit the download attempts for a given file without generating passwords for each user.

It is something that many shareware registering services do.

They set up a directory with the full version of a program, and then send the download link to the buyers.

This downlad links is generally limited in time or attempts.

For example: The buyer has X attempts for downloading the file, or has X days with x attempts to download that file.

I think your best bet would be to get hold of a freeware download counter script (some PHP examples here [hotscripts.com]) which may well have the features you need, or could at least be a starting point for modification.
