FormMail

I've moved over to a new server, one which I can touch and add to as I please instead of the magical one before which took 15 phone calls and 30 emails for a restart.

The previous server had no FormMail abilities so I sat my forms on another server (unix box) and had them sent from there.

Now that I can access the server I want to add this feature to it.

I'm running NT4.0 with Apache 1.3.22, CF5, and MSSQL 2000.

Does anyone know what software there is out there or whether the existing software has the capabilities?

TIA

Justa

I do believe IIS 4 has mail capabilities. But don't quote me on that, I'm too sleepy! :)

justa, if you use formmail (don't know if that's compatible with IIS) - rename it to something else, there's been a security issue lately with some using other people's formmail to send spam mail out.

Please point out if I'm way off here but isn't IIS 4 M$ web server? Similar to apache but not as good (please, don't let that comment turn into a IIS vs Apache debate) I'm running Apache as the web server, it's just running on NT4.0 Server O/S.

Assuming you have perl on your NT box your apache should work fine with it.

Regarding the security issue; the latest version of FormMail looks to have addressed this (>v1.6 have the flaw).

For NT Perl see: [activestate.com...]
For FormMail itself: [worldwidemart.com...]

You can also use sendmail for windows.

O.k. You are running Apache on NT, and using Cold Fusion 5, with MS SQL 2000. You know Cold Fusion is a scripting language and has mailing functions. In other words, you could write your own mailer using Cold Fusion. No extra software, right? :)

Cheers for the link Gethan, I'll check that out now.

txbakers: Sendmail, have you used this before? Pro's Con's?

NoSanity: yeah, I know it is a scripting language. I'm actually really enjoying working with both products. Very basic at the moment, but I'm always look for more challenging projects to work on.

The problem with scripting my own is I have no idea where to start. I'll search here and other search engines, but if anyone has a good reference starting point let me know.

Looking at CF5 I need a mail server for this to work. The mail server we use is unavailable for this (it's hosted by another company and is too costly). Can anyone suggest a mail server? I've checked out a few but I'm not up to speed on whats what.

Justa: Neglected to mention that you will need a mail server also on your NT box for use with FormMail.

Sendmail is an open source mail program - predominantly fround on Unix systems. [sendmail.org...] - though no information on NT is found there.

Look at [ntsendmail.com...] haven't run it myself (unix guy) but it looks very promising.

If your on a hosting package chances are a mail server is included.

I like the NT version of Sendmail. Easy to configure and it works. What more can I ask for?

Not on a hosting package. I actually have a brand new server for work. And for some reason (I'm not complaining, I'm just shocked) the outsourced IT people have let me have admin access and a licence to do what ever I want to do to it.

It's like making the transition in school from blunt plastic sissors to the shiny metal sharp ones, I'm just hoping I don't cut myself to badly

I'll check out ntsendmail now.

Cheers for the help.

I really wouldn't recommend the FormMail (or any other program) from Matts Script archive.

You would be better to use the FormMail program at:

[nms-cgi.sourceforge.net...]

which will work fine on windows with the 'nms_sendmail' that is a sendmail work-a-like written in Perl.

Gellyfish:

Your nms link provided an interesting point-of-view. How many of their scripts have you used? Have you been happy with them?
