Hi all, I was wondeirng if there's a simple program out there that detects what state the visitor is coming from? I want to detect visitors coming from California.

You would need an IP address list to effectively geo target. You might be able to find out at arin.net more about the IP ranges that might be assigned to california.

That's a tough one. IPs are not tied to geographic locations per se. You can usually get fairly accurate on country of origin, but to go down further is more difficult. Consider this: If I were to use a national ISP that is based in Viriginia, depending on how they assign me my IP and how they have them named/pooled it could appear that I live in Virgina (their headquarters). I actually live in NY.

There are companies that sell geo-targeting software. They sell it because it requires that they do constant updates to their lists. What is accurate today will probably not be accurate by the end of the week.
