Redirects for old pages

Worth bothering with?

I'm working with a client who has already redesigned their site and has a bunch of old file names that are still in search engine indexes as broken links. They were not pulling much if any traffic, and the content is no longer important. Before I go telling the client that they should set up 301 redirects for all of them, I'm wondering if I'm just creating busy work and unneeded expense, or whether it's something that should be done for other reasons related to search engine performance or whatever.

If it were up to me I'd go ahead and do it, just because I hate loose ends, but in this case I'm not in the driver's seat.

Have you done anything to customize the site's 404 error page? A thoughtfully planned one-size-fits-all error page might be all you'd need, maybe with a search box, links to main navigational pages, etc.

Duh...tired brain doing meaningless mental exercises. The 404 page is the obvious answer. Can't believe it didn't occur to me cuz I've seen it suggested in a few threads. Thanks!!
