I have looked ALL over the apache.org site but cannot for the life of me find any info on the meaning of symbols (if that is the correct word) such as '^', '!', '$' and others that are used in the syntax of directives.

Any help appreciated.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Tom.

You'll have better luck searching for regular expression syntax or regex syntax as that is the true origin of those symbols.

Thanks AIR

My understanding is that depending on the Module these characters may have different meanings OR can I assume they are used in the same manner for MOST modules.

OK, don't bother with this thread as BIRD in the prior thread 'close to perfect...' has explained quite a few things about matching. Thanks Bird.

Gee.. I wish though there was ONE place that explained this stuff at apache.org

I also wish I could win $10 mil.

Are the wishes equivalent in chance :)

Try
[httpd.apache.org ]

page down to the colored box.

I'll be taking delivery of my share of the ten million dollars at your convenience.

Thanks,

Yes some of it is there but as a preface they say -
"Some hints about the syntax of regular expressions"
and afterwards they say
"For more information about regular expressions either have a look at your local regex(3) manpage or its src/regex/regex.3 copy in the Apache 1.3 distribution. If you are interested in more detailed information about regular expressions and their variants (POSIX regex, Perl regex, etc.) have a look at the following dedicated book on this topic:

Mastering Regular Expressions
Jeffrey E.F. Friedl
Nutshell Handbook Series
O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. 1997
ISBN 1-56592-257-3"

Whereas I was betting that ALL would not be in the one place on the Apache site.

"Gee.. I wish though there was ONE place that explained this stuff at apache.org"

Sorry, you'll have to wait. :)
