here is something i came across (not in this discussion forum)

There are Three types of search engines
Robot driven – the regular type like AV, Excite, Infoseek etc,
Web Directory services – like Yahoo.
the news type which is called (maybe not too new)
Meta search engines
here again we have 4 types
Intelligent type - eg Metacrawler, Savvy Search, Mamma.
Interface type
Split result type
Link type

Intelligent type is the only one that uses new technology to get better results
They send the keywords to several robot driven search engine
Reorder the result by thier own technique

anybody has any info on how the other 3 work any example on existing search engines of this type would be helpful. can it be taken for granted that they work like the name describes i.e. on links to other search engines,etc. i would be very helpful if someone could clarify.

no amount of search on search engines is giving me such specific data.
