No outbound links?

Can a site be successful without reciprocal linking?

Hi there, I am developing my new site and m thinking of not to do any reciprocal link exchange and not having outward links at all. I m thinking of gaining the inward links from directories, blogs, guestbooks and some of my other sites.

I would like to know if anybody out there have tried this on their site? if yes. what were the result.
Secondly, How would Google will see this site, will it be favourable or will get penalized.

Thanks for any answers.

I tried that with a single page site, 31K in size, no outgoing links, very little promotion, 6 months old. it gets a few visitors per day.

You need to do a lot more reading of the posts on this site.

If you are not prepared to provide your viewers with outbound links to other on-topic resources, you may as well not bother with the site.

It is highly unlikely it will rank high enough for anyone to ever see it.

I tried this approach, for just this one site, after reading one of Brett's posts about diversity. Having pages with and without links, different sizes, different subjects, etc etc, etc, so that some might survive algo changes.
On my main site if have tons of outgoing links, but pages are dropping from the index like flies this week.
You never can tell.

Outbound links are very important IHMO. Good ranking depends on a clear overall thematic feel for your site. The sites you link to say a lot about the theme of your site. Maybe even more so then your incoming links, since you cannot control these.
I would link out carefully, making sure that every link are within the theme and that every link are placed exactly right.

Outbound links are important. Linking to relevant site, rather than to your network of possibly unrelated sites (I don't know if your sites are related or not), will be highly beneficial. Directories, guestbooks, blogs, articles, etc. are a good start, but you will need to diversify. Exchange a few links if they add value to your site, but you don't have to go overboard. At least, that's my opinion.
