Hello,
I just read that if you use certain link building software, you risk being banned from Google and the like..

Any truth to this? I was thinking of purchasing for new site.

Thanks

Linking software is a waste. It is right up there with "automated phone soliciting". How do you want your business to be known.

Pick up the phone and start your link building the right way, by building relationships with other companies.

cabowabo, have you used link building software?
Or are you merely venting over recip link emails?

I have used them, but gained more success and better results with using the phone to spur relationships.

Since you brought it up, recip link emails don't help the issue.

I'm pretty much at the hands of you pro's here if you can agree :) I'm not too concerned about my image if I can get good quality links without getting banned. That's my only concern. I don't see what's so "shady" about using the software.

Thanks

Whats worked for me is using a program like Arelis to find relevant sites that have a link exchange and then shoot them a straightforward email that you want a link. So I guess my suggestion is if you use Arelis is not to go all out and use the automated email but rather as a prospecting tool, then approach the prospective sites as personable as possible, and keep it relevant.

As for getting banned I really do not know if it would. It is definitely possible, if go balls out and get tons of links too quickly. I wouldn't doubt it if the default layout of the link pages of any of the recip link programs could recognized by google and factored in.

Perhaps you should read over Matt Cutts' blog from Google. Here is part of his post entitled "SEO Mistakes: link exchange emails"

Here’s a mistake that people still sometimes make: buying a random software package that they think will get them a gold mine of links, especially by bulk emailing reputable sites.

If you are looking for long term results for your site I would do it by hand.

Now there is a solid piece of advice.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - linking programs don't kill websites, stupid webmasters kill websites...

It isn't the tool, it is how you use it. It's a weapon - used properly and with caution, it can have value. In the wrong hands and used without discretion, it can cause nothing but damage.

I use arellis, but I only use it for prospecting for potential link partners, and for the maintenance of the link directory. It works well for this. If used improperly, it could label you as a spammer, I guess.

What is wrong with the amount of requests you send out? We work on law of averages but also work on getting the right emails. The more we send the more links we get. I see no spam problem here.
