Two Admins a good/bad thing?

I'm the true admin, but am going to get a lot of help...

I am starting a new forum on a pretty popular site about cars. I'm pretty confident it will work well and I'm excited. However, I've never been deeply involved in a forum before, yet it is still my responsibility to run it. A co-worker is a big forum geek and practically lives in a forum he participates in. He immediately expressed interest in helping me when I set up our company's forum, and I'm glad to have him and his experience around.

I was considering giving him full admin privileges, but wanted to see what others thought about that. I trust him, but is it a bad idea to have more than one "Admin" in a forum? Ultimately, it is my baby, and no one else is responsible, but I also want him to feel like he can take his experience and help get this new forum off the ground.

I've never read his posts on his old forum, but I'm guessing since his professional reputation is at risk here, I can trust him (he's our sales guy, and he wouldn't sabatoge his own pay check).

I have 5 admins, on a site with 20,000 members. There is no correct number of admins to have on your website. You assign admins as needed.

If I were you, it sounds like this guy knows what he is doing. To make my life easier, I would make him an admin.

Having someone around who's been through the "rough stuff" would be a huge benefit. I "silent partner" admin a few friends' boards and help them with gory details like automating backups, server moves, forum software upgrades, template hacking, mysql table optimization and repair. If you are new to forums (or even to the particular software you are using), having a seasoned vet who knows the ropes in the world beyond the admin panel is a big plus.

We have a forum that has gone from 0 to 4500 in the last 4 weeks. If my partner and I tried to do it ourselves, we would have crashed and burned.

We have 3 mods and 3 admins who keep it going smoothly. Give them the keys and trust, and then sit back and learn, and enjoy the ride.

If you have a large forum it'd be next to impossible to do it without help. I would highly recommend a second admin.

As an alternative to a full admin, you might consider super-moderators (or admin-lights :)). These people would be able to moderate across all forums, ban users, etc., but not alter the forum structure or wreak other havoc on the board.

i have 30 members on my forum (i just est up 3 weeks ago) but i have 3 admins including myself, i do most of the work they just help keep an eye one things but im not gonna add any more unless i get like 20k members

While we are talking about the number of the admin we should also think about the quality of good admin to be taken into account during increasing their numbers as I think the admins should polite and helpful to the members, few admins can have worst egos, or bad attitudes. It is sometimes tough to accurately display your worth when you spend 90% of your time sitting a place.
