Anybody know a good UK web site host, that has a good ping time, bandwidth and doesn't cost the earth.

I actually gave up with UK hosts. I host my sites with Crystaltech, a US hosting company that is cheap, excellent facilities and the most amazing tech support. To get the same stuff with a UK based one would be about 5 times the cost! Suppose only reason to keep it uk is if the law says you have to

In general there will be approximately a 10x speed increase for hosting in the UK (over a US host) if your target market is the UK.
Also your tech support will be working the same hours as you work.

UK hosting (IMO) is essential for .co.uk domains for search engine brownie points. There are plenty to choose from giving all you want at affordable price.
