W3C Site Validation banana peel?

Are they trying to scare me?

I just validated a few pages after small modifications.
I happened to look down at the bottom of this validator page of theirs:
[validator.w3.org...]

There is a wide banner across the bottom, just above the copyright stuff.
On the right side of the banner, there appears to be a carelessly tossed
yellow banana peel on the floor. What gives?

Maybe its something else, but it looks for all the world like a banana peel.
If so, it sends the wrong message.
A Code Validation logo should be more reassuring. -Larry

Maybe it means that they are showing you the banana peels so you won't slip on it?

SEOmike: That's a thought. Maybe the message is something like:
" See this banana peel? Invalid code is full of hazards like that.."

I hope that's not it. Negative advertising usually backfires.
The customer associates the bad effect with a beneficial product!
I considered a yellow ribbon, a dead canary etc., all negative, but it still
looks like a banana peel. Maybe a short email to W3C will clarify matters.

Speaking of dead canaries, I drew up a cartoon of a DC for my site and scanned it.
It looks good as a .bmp file, but my freebie bitmap-to-gif program won't convert it.
Too many colors. Heck, I just have 2 or 3 colors. I need .gif or .jpg for file size.

Does anyone know of a free converter program I can download that will work? -Larry

I got back onto the W3C page and found a link to Feedback on the top.
From there, I found a way to post a message to some forum without joining.

Basically, I asked what the deal is with the banana peel on the floor and left an email address.
I just got my first response, probably unofficial from some reader.

Message (paraphrased) is that its actually a half-eaten banana on a bench,
instead of an empty peel on the floor. That's all the guy wrote. - Larry

Okay...so a half-eaten banana on a bench. Reminds me of valid code, doesn't it you? ;)

Although, with a little imagination, it could also be a high-heel shoe of an unusual color, twisted strangely after being baked for awhile at a high temperature, with the heel broken off.

Try the freeware edition of Ultimate Paint. I use it to create 256 color images from 16M color images (use "save as"). I doubt the freeware version has batch conversion but the best image compression I've found for window snapshots is 256 color .png images - they're great.

Now someone mentions it, it does look very much like it's a half-eaten banana. (Up until now I'd never paid very much attention to it, thinking vaguely it was a little nugget of gold, or possibly a golden booger).

Personally I think a much better logo would be a "wanted" poster containing descriptions of the Internet Explorer developers ;-).
