Message Too Old, No Replies

I just got a rather scary, profane laced email

Where do I report it?

I just got a kind of scary, very profane laced email from someone who was mad that I had not answered his previous weird (though not as scary) email. He had a question about one of my sites that I didn't reply to.

It was on a free web mail so I contacted the web mail provider.

Is there anyone else I could report something like this to? Normally, I just ignore weird emails but this one was particularly creepy.

If you have reason to believe that 'creepy' knows your location, then the county sheriff or local PD. Otherwise report it to the round file... maybe with a wary eye.

If you ignored them before.... did this one disclose any non-public knowledge about you/your loved ones?

Could they trace you through your domain registration?
Is it a business address or home?
Would they be able to find your home details through your registration details and local white pages?
That's a bit worrying if they can, some people are just cowards and will send all sorts of threats when they think they're anonymous and can get away with it, most don't follow up on the threats but some are malicious and will try all sorts of things to make your life difficult.

At the end of the day a threat is a threat.
Report it to your local Police with as much info as you can, copies of e-mails with headers (to help trace senders pc) etc
I'd also check their IP address, if they in another state or country I'd not worry too much but if they're local then that's different.

This sort of thing makes me glad I registered most of my sites via proxy.

Good luck, stay safe.

Jane: What kind of website do you have?
Is it commercial? Possibly some disgruntled customer?
Is it a discussion group / blog which may have offended somebody?

Sounds like a nut-case in any event, and yes that's worrisome. - Larry

Why not just set up your mail rules for autodelete for this particular person. This way, you don't even need to read them.

Most of the time, these are nut cases, who just want some attention. The worst thing you can do is to respond to them.

If they start calling you 'tell them they got the wrong number', and then call the authorities.

all the police can do is clean up messes, even they admit they are spectacularly unable to prevent bad things from happening.

God, I though I had it bad putting up with lazy impolite texting style emails...

By checking the email headers, you may be able to work out where this email comes from. If it's another continent, ignore it and bin any follow-ups (nutcases get bored like the rest of us).

If the originator is closer, it's worth while making a complaint. You may find a complaint to their ISP will get the account terminated but, depending on the content, reporting it to the police may be more appropriate.

If you can't fathom the email headers, the moderators might not mind too much if you post them and someone will probably help. You should XXXX anything that overtly identifies you or the sender (like email addresses).

Thanks for all of the replies. It is just someone who is mad because I did not answer any of his emails he sent to me regarding one of my web sites.

I did forward the email to the ISP. The email didn't threaten any physical violence but it did have a lot of anger and profanity. I'd be surprised if the ISP does not take action, but I don't know if it rises to the level of something that would be actionable by the police. (I don't have any traceable personal info on the site or whois information.)
