I'm curious how much traffic a competing website is getting. Is there any way I can find out how many hits his website gets? I can check the google page rank but that doesn't tell me his traffic. Does it?

No, you really need to review the web server logs to know for sure.

The Alexa rank is easily abused (I once raised my rank from 500K to low five figures just with regular visits to my site) BUT I have also found it somewhat accurate when not using the toolbar myself and getting legitimate five figure rankings.
It skews heavily toward pop culture traffic and Korean and other Asian markets, but it can be useful in comparing similar sites (with abuse caveat noted above).
