Chickadees, Darwin, and SERPs

Do these three go together?

This afternoon, I read an interesting science article about chickadee mating habits. No, this is not foo, check it out at:

www.usatoday.com/news/healthscience/science/2002-05-02-chickadee.htm

This got me to wondering how searchers are like female chickadees.

Male chickadees constantly test each other with songs. You know how chickadees sing "SERP, SERP" :)

The alpha female chickadee has a preferred "SERP" provider. If he wins his challenges and provides what she wants to hear, she stays. If he loses a challenge an provides a less-than-satisfactory "SERP," she may stray for a little bit but will probably come back. If he repeatedly loses the "SERP" challenges, then he's no longer the Alpha male.

Search engines are tested (like birds with song) each day, every day. They build loyalty by winning the challenges.

I found the section on "bird divorce" interesting in regards to what happens when someone offers a better search engine. We've seen the migration pattern happen before.

It is interesting to think of the Internet in those terms. Users can be very fickle. If you burn them they can easily go somewhere else and probably find the same information or products at the same or better prices somewhere else. I can think of a couple instances when some ecommerce sites have underperformed for me and very quickly I found someone to replace them.

I think it is even more important to do whatever you can to keep a customer happy in the volitile world of the Internet because it can be easier for them to leave and go somewhere else.
