Does third level domains hit your ranking?

Is it safe to make multi sites with third level domain names.....
or do you rank better with multible web domain names?

"seo1.example.com
seo2.example.com
seo3.example.com"

VS

"www.seo1-example.com
www.seo2-example.com
www.seo3-example.com"?

Some sites use subdomains very effectively/successfully (e.g., About.com, or the Startpagina network in The Netherlands)! These sites have consistently had good rankings over a long period of time; I would certainly not assume that third-level domains are "bad" per se!

If they are totally different sites then you should get totally different domains.
If they're related or part of a directory like on about.com then use subdomains.

if you want better ranking then you dont want to patition your website, if subdomains are seen as differt websites.....so for better ranking you shouldnt use subdomains?
