Choosing Forum Moderators?

Hello All!

I am at the point of starting a site that my main focus will be my forum to discuss all sorts of issues, and although I don't have this problem now, if I were able to secure a pretty good amount of traffic and members, I would need moderators.

So my question is what kind of things should I look for or do to acquire quality moderators, because without quality moderators the forum could turn unproductive really fast.

I mean is it good to ask publicly for "applications" to become a moderator, or is it better to approach somebody personally?

You trying to steal trade secrets? ;)

Seriously though, you could do worse than check the various charters here when thinking of formulating your policy. I would begin by making a few basic decisions on how I wanted the forum to run before thinking about mods.

Getting mods, and then trying to impose policy, or make policy up as you go has the potential to go wrong, and cause bad feeling. Get the groundwork laid, and you will likely find that a few names come to mind for invite, and once things are running, a well-run board is likely to generate requests to be mods on its own.

There are plenty of moderated boards out there. Go and sniff around a few, see which ideas you like, and which you don't

Tall,

Thanks for the quick response, you know I did not even think about looking in the charters for ideas. That is a great idea. I mean I have created a charter for my soon to be forums, but I guess I was not creative enough to look at other charters first.

Again thanks.

opulyst - we have a Moderator's Handbook here [webmasterworld.com]. It contains an exhaustive list of qualifications and guidlines that we mods here live by. It also gives you a good idea of what to look for in members taht you're considering for moderatorship.
