How big is the average website?

Is 50MB more than one thinks?

Some hosting plans offer 1-2 GB and others as little as 25MB for anywhere between 5-20$ per month. Those that offer less space usually have something else included such as blog builder tools, site building & file management tools or forum tools. How mutch space does one really need for a content based website geared for adsense and affiliate marketing? How big roughly is a page with 500 words and maybe 3 medium pictures/banners?

Pretty small if you're talking just the HTML and you aren't using blog or forum type software.

Average HTML page: 20-80 kB depending.
Add images per page. Total per page shouldn't be over 100kB, should be much less if done decently.

If you build nice tight pages, you should be able to create thousands of pages and stay within a 25 MB limit.

You might want to find a place that allows you to upgrade your hosting plan when/if you need more space.

It all depends upon the type of site. There are very many sites that are well under 5MB, such as sites promoting small businesses (equiv. of yellow page ads, with map, general product information, etc.), local organization sites with meeting information and a few pictures from the last event, etc. By now almost every store, resturant, church, club, etc. has a web site. Most of these are very small.

On the other hand, large businesses with on-line ordering, pictures of hundreds of products, etc. may be much larger.

I know one person who could easily live on the income from one site (lots of content) that is slightly under 20 MB. But others require many times that much.

Make sure you have a plan that is expandable and provides the features you need now and that you might need later.
