He who has a thing to sell
And goes and whispers down a well
is not as apt to get the dollars
as he who climbs a tree and HOLLERS!

If you want converting, targetted traffic then AdWords is by far the best bet out of your list.

Banner exchange is unlikely to get you very far if you have no traffic to start with - you have to be getting at least some visitors in order to build up credits. Then you have to watch out for the "quality" of the banners that appear on your nice professional looking site. It might not look so professional any more...

I have never purchased "X thousand hits for $x" so I cannot speak of its effectiveness, however if you search this forum you will find several discussions and information about where this traffic actually comes from and what results others have had.

Adwords can jump start your traffic while you work on getting traffic from the free serps. From what I understand, Adwords doesn't have to be overly expensive, if it's done right. The Adwords Forum [webmasterworld.com] might give you some ideas on how to do that.

Links can be very important to getting traffic for two reasons, first a well placed link on a related site can send you traffic directly, and second, links help you attain better ranking in the free search results. Dig around the Link Development Forum [webmasterworld.com] for ideas on how to get links.

Banner exchanges might work I suppose, although I really doubt it would do much, and they are "exchanges", do you really want to load up a professional site with a bunch of banners?

Buying traffic doesn't seem like a good idea from what I've read here at WW.

Funny enough, I spent some time hollering at a group of business people yesterday and the phone rang about 1 hour later with a contract. Hollering does work!

In answer to the original question you can get traffic by other means - advertise the site on your car, your business cards, flyers, radio ads, sponsoring little leauges, a bowling team, free t-#*$!rs, basball caps, etc. That only works if your site deals with local stuff though. But try to think of OTHER means than the usual methods.

Exactly. EVERYONE does adsense, et al. So what.

Do something differently, or as Apple put it: Think Different.

So you are selling widgets too. Big Deal.

And you are putting ads where everyone else does. With the same copy, and the same stock images.

Be bold. Be different. Take risks. Be new.

HOLLER!

As it was said before, AdWords is one of the best marketing options out there. It's very cost effective and a cheap way to build brand. Also don't forget about Overture. Like AdWords they are also a very powerful PPC (Pay Per Click), but if you only have a small amount of money you can spend it's likely better not to try them out yet and wait to you have the money.

Banner exchange can work. But you have to know how to use them correctly. You could buy some credits from a banner exchange instead of earning them. They won't bring much traffic because of the lack of being able to target the audience you want, but they can help you brand your web site.

Buying traffic is indeed a waste of time. More then half of the time these services use software called robots to repeating request your web page so that it appears that they are sending you traffic, when in fact their not.

I agree that Adword is a cost effective way to bring traffic to your site however it is important to monitor thoroughly its performance, as your approach should be to increase not only your site traffic, but also your "conversions" toward the sales, inquiries, or any other end result to meet your ROI time and effort in most cost effective way.

Thanks everybody..

but to go more deeply..

what would be better in adwords..
for ex.

30 000 impression
or
500 clicks?

cuz they cost about the same..

I should recommend Cost Per Impression if you have trust and main focus on advertising for creating or strengthening name or brand identity.
You should look for google "Smart Pricing" for CPI.
