I ask this Q here as I guess that it has a lot of general interest. I have a free site (on tripod.com) and I would like it ranked in google. As I understand it, google does not necessarily have any prejudice against sites on free web hosts such as geocites and tripod (anyone care to comment?). However, just in case, does anyone think that it may help my case with google if I did not use my tripod domain name of the form:

www.tripod.com/myname/index.html

But instead used a free redirection service such as

www.dot.tk

such that I can mask my tripod.com domain name, using a domain name of the form below instead.

www.myname.tk

The bottom line:
So, instead of giving google:
www.tripod.com/myname/index.html
I give it:
www.myname.tk
What I give google is not a subdomain and has no mention of free tripod in it. Will this make google look on it more favourably?

Your site will always be hosted directly on your host, anything that points to it is no more than a redirect. there will be no real page(s) in your redirect. Google still needs to crawl your real site to index your content.

It all depends what method of redirection your forwarding service uses. A 302 or 301 redirect may make a little difference, but a simple refresh redirect will only send the bot to your correct site location.

I think if you take your site seriously you really need to buy a domain name and a hosting account. They can be very cheap and will set you up to be able to do a lot more than you currently can with a free host.

In the long run you will be much more satisfied if you buy a domain, its really cheap, and just find a free host that will let you use your domain tripod may but I am not sure.

Scrap together the $8.00 it really is the best route to go.
