AOL Spam Filters

How strict are they?

We have been sending out email newsletters on behalf of our clients to people who have signed up to their databases.

We have noticed recently a slightly increased number of bounceback emails i.e. emails not getting through to their inteneded destination.

A pattern seems to be emerging. Most (probably around 95%) of these bounceback emails are from users with @aol.com email addresses.

At first I thought it was the URL we were sending from that might be causing the problem, but it the same thing has been happening with a few different clients.

Does anyone know the default email spam settings for AOL. I have heard that by default, the newer versions of AOL block emails that contain links or images. Is this true?

If anyone can let me know the default spam settings for AOL email it would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Are you sending all of these emails from the same IP address? It really doesn't matter what URL is listed as being the sender. Many of the filters take a closer look at the IP than who you say you are sending them from. They blacklist by IP address, so if enough people clicked on the spam button in AOL for emails coming from the IP you send from, the whole lot would be considered spam and therefore blacklisted.

And before you say "We don't send spam", I know that, but many people use the spam button as a convienient way to opt-out without realizing that it has other consequences.
