Intranet software question

Hello all. I am currently researching intranet software solutions for my workplace and am wondering what all is out there as far as software for building an intranet.

What I'm after is a user-friendly portal site that users can start from to do daily activities such as having shortcut icons on the site that will open up different applications like MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. as well as having forums and the latest happenings posted on the front page, file sharing, calendar, etc.

I'm mainly looking for an open-source solution, but will certainly look at purchasing an app if it comes to that.

I recommend looking in [hotscripts.com...] under the PHP section and in particular look at the content management systems (CMS) and site portal software.
