Do they matter in Google ranking or not? I know a few years ago they did. The new site I'm doing will get most traffic from PPC, but we obviously don't want to lose organic if possible and we have both versions of the domain name.
Theories?

I don't think the SE's place any weight on hyphenated names any more. In fact I am pretty certain that too many hyphens and keywords will get you penalised.
my-site.com is ok and will not suffer.
my-site-and-keyword-keyword-keyword.com is likely to get you penalised.
I think the shorter the domain the more pro it looks

I doubt the Search Engines even look at the filename anymore. If so it is a trivial weighting. It is too easy to spam.
