Would be very interested to hear people's views on what is the best free (perhaps open source) website toolkit. Don't want to fork out for dreamweaver. Is there any free tool that comes close? I guess this topic would be interesting to a lot of people.

A few free ones to try...

HTML-KIT - Lots of features. Little documentation

NVU - WYSIWYG Not a lot of bells and whistles but gets the job done

playing around with NVU. Is nice. I defo want to use what you see is what you get. Am I using the best open source option in this catagory? I have a nasty feeling inside that maybe this is not the best 1. Can someone put my mind at rest?

Use of the word 'best' and NVU together isn't something I'd do. Yes it's the best wysiwyg that's open source, but only because it's really the only one out there that is trying to do that kind of work.

The real 'best' open source code editor is another question, for linux kde, Kate is pretty good. For a free code editor, html-kit is ok but very bloated for what it does. Crimson editor is a very nice piece of freeware, not wysimwyg.

On the bright side, if you look around you should be able to find a used copy of dreamweaver mx out there, there really isn't anything remotely close to as good as it on the market that I'm aware of currently.

Most open source coders don't use wysimwyg editors I think, it was never a very high priority, although I'm sure nvu will be pretty functional one of these days.

Others may disagree, that's ok. Personally, I've never found any reason to upgrade from dreamweaver 4, I use dreamweaver for only one thing, site search and replace.

find an old copy of dreamweaver 3, its fine works well and should be dirt cheap.
