I'm wondering if any SE's may penalize for duplicate filenames in separate directories on the same domain. I'm creating a directory with listing pages for each US state and Canadian province, so the file naming scheme would be something like this:

widgets.com/retailers/alabama.html,
widgets.com/retailers/arizona.html, etc.

widgets.com/repairs/alabama.html,
widgets.com/repairs/arizona.html, etc.

widgets.com/rentals/alabama.html,
widgets.com/rentals/arizona.html, etc.

etc. etc.

There are enough files named index.html on every site, I doubt it has a bad effect.
Which is not to discount imaginative file naming ;)

/\ /\ on that topic,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't file names contribute to a site's ranking? I've worked with some SEO's that had me rename all the files and directories, you could possibly benefit greatly from

widgets.com/rentals_alabama.html
widgets.com/rentals_arizona.html

but then the directory name + file name may be doing the same thing . . .
