Happens intermittently and has only been happening for the last couple of weeks.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Can anyone shed any light on the situation?

might be a RAM issue?

I run into the mysql client out of memory issue, which was a direct result of the KeyCache filling up. That was a nightmare for a while.
