For some bizarre reason I have lost all my emails pst and present from Moz.

When I went to get emails it defaulted to Email Wizard to set up an account.

Surely the old setting must be somewhere?

Cam anyone rescue me please?

On Win2K at work, my actual mail is stored at:

\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\(some random seq).default\Mail

Welcome to the joys of open source software! I am using it myself because of the spam engine, but find it to be, shall we say, delicate. The Netscape 4.x versions were much more reliable but sadly do not have the spam engine.

The email data is probably not lost. Your profile got corrupted.

To recover, first check that there is a user.js and prefs.js in the data directory. This is important because their presence prevents the rest of the directory from getting wiped out during profile creation. Then, create a new profile, and when asked to specify a directory, point at the existing data directory.

For a more detailed explanation search for "netscape faq" and look in the newsmail section.

I've been having a lot of problems with Thunderbird also. I have about 8 different e-mail accounts. E-mails get put into the wrong account. Multiple e-mails, sometimes from different acounts, will get "fused" together so that the bodies of both of them appear in a single e-mail.

I'm getting sick of Thunderbird's issues, but I can't find another e-mail program that handles multiple accounts and will let me choose where to store the e-mail data.

Can anybody recommend another e-mail client?

I've never had any of the problems mentioned in this thread, but other good email clients are:

Eudora
[eudora.com...]

The Bat!
[ritlabs.com...]

I started with TBird when Firefox 1.0 came out and found it a great replacement for Outlook. It's checking 6 accounts with no problems, but I backup the data files every 4 hours.

I liked Eudora and nearly switched, but I often use E-Mail templates and Eudora's version is very buggy.

I tried the Bat before Thunderbird. I forget why I ditched The Bat, but it wasn't working out.

I love Thunderbird, but it is buggy as hell.

Does anyone know how I can recover the folders and files. They are still there but won't show in the new profile.

Did you try the Thunderbird support forums [forums.mozillazine.org]?

Yep,

Lots of ideas and suggestions from some very helpful people. Sadly I'm still begging for help!

Like I said, the netscape faq. The support forums won't get you anywhere. All they'll do is duck their heads in the sand and claim that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

This is the one I have archived on the same cd as the install archive:

[ilias.ca...]

search strategy: netscape unofficial faq mailnews "7.2"

Failing that, import your email into outlook express. Create a new profile, and import it back to whateverbird.

Hint. You would be *much* better off on Netscape 7.2

For the others looking for multiple email account coverage try looking for an old email app called calypso. It is now freeware. Sadly, it has no spam filter functions. Otherwise it is great. Doesn't understand most email exploits, so it adds a measure of safety.

Finally, if OE comes up with a integrated spam engine, I'm *GONE*
