Well - if you search G for definitions of bespoke [google.com]

it seems to mean "custom made".

So I would guess it means that it is a term that webmaster target when they can't rank for the money term :o

Bespoke itself means "custom-made". I'm not sure that a template-based site would qualify as "Custom-made", although perhaps the meaning has morphed in the website industry.

Actually, if you search G for "bespoke web design" you find that most of the sites using that term are using it to refer to custom-designed sites.

My favorite explanation was this one:

I call this the "Bespoke" period of Web design, named for the time-honored, English process of hand-tailoring suits based on the customer's individual characteristics and needs. Done right, the suit fits like a glove and lasts a lifetime – or until the waistline needs to be altered.

"Bespoke" has a nice ring to it. After all, a Web site should "be speaking" for you. Only a talented Web designer can do this.

There was one site, though, offering "bespoke designs" that included a "custom-built web site template." (?)

I build 'bespoke websites' and I use the term because each site starts with a blank page and is tailored exactly to the clients wishes (guided by me for seo purposes).
No templates, I never use or base, on previous sites, even when asked to do so.

As you can now 'buy a site in a box' I felt it important to highlight the difference. My only concern is that the term may sound pompous to some.

I don't claim the approach to be better but so many people in my area have sites which are identical bar their name on the top

depends what you mean by template! most sites of any size uses templates of a sort, if they were made specially for that site then that would be bespoke surely? ... if they have been used on another site then surely not.

Originally it means "spoken request or order" ..in the garment industry it has come to mean "not off the peg" ..which isn't quite the same thing ..
Given the original meaning ..actually any website wether template or "one off" is in response to an order ...

thus = meaningless term used out of context to infer exclusivity /quality in product ...( sometimes justifiably )...

"custom-built web site template."

Perhaps a system of include files or something that can be used as a template for pages the customer wants to add in the future? In that case it could be custom-built just for that customer, but still qualify as a template.
