If I type in my website name in yahoo it picks up parts of my webpage with those words including the copyright and menu title. After the copyright it says (Support this site), which I would rather not show up in a description of my site. Is there a way to make sure certain sections of text can't show up in your sites description?

I think that there isn't a way to get that;
But using and combining properly text and description tag you could have in the SERP the desired snippet.
Look at this thread:

You could include your domain name in a different part of your webpage so that your snippet changes - or move the "support this site" to a different page of the page.

The real question is, how many people aside from you are searching for your website by its name?

I type in "webmasterworld" and many site names all the time. If my hands are already on the keyboard no reason to grab the mouse to open bookmarks, but I do see your point.

Maybe I'll put it in a seperate div or table so it's not part of the copyright.
