The offer was immediately a runaway success, we soon had thousands of requests piled up for people desperate to get their hands on this CD. And the feedback was tremendous, people who had received their CD were telling their friends to come and sign up. We also generated some high quality leads as people had to give their mailing address and reason for their interest in widgets.
Trouble is, the funding ran out after a while (it cost about $2 to make each CD and post it) but it's not something that we think people will be prepared to pay for.
While we were running the promotion, we saw a dramatic rise in search engine traffic and we are thinking of running something similar again. But this time, we want to offer our visitors something free that doesn't cost $2 for us!
Do you have any suggestions...?
What I have so far is:
1) Compile a set of zip files of all our key widget information, and allow visitors to download it after filling out a request form.
2) A monthly prize draw where people can win a free widget or an Amazon gift voucher.
Both of which sound a bit lame and dated...!
Why don't you try programs like "get paid for reading emails / subscriptions" which will probably cost you less $ per user. Or offer a price for each user refering exactly 5 new friends (the CD?!).
Just some thoughts
