registration/signup procedures

what's the best user signup system?

which of these does everyone think is more user friendly :

- supply an email address at signup, and a random (but human readable) password gets emailed to you

- supply an email address and a password of your own choosing, but you have to confirm the email by visiting the URL in the signup email

any thoughts? I'm leaning towards the first one

I also like the second. I think most users would like to pick their own password and have little patience when it comes to changing it.

I have been meaning to look for a php script to do the second option. That's the way I like to sign up.

I would definitely go for the second option, I really don't like it when sites don't let me choose my own password.
