Registration activation link..

Why and how?

hi,
1st i wana know whats the main purpose for activation link? is it just to prevent automation for registration process?

2nd how do we do it? i wil my thoughts. the user fill the form then we create link n send to user's mail... then when the link clicked it open the page that inserts the data to DB so this is all right then is it safe to write password in that link and is there a way to encrypt the link or the pass.

whats ur overall advices concerning this subj?

The activation link is to ensure that a user signs up with a real, active email address that they own. This limits the number of times someone can sign up, and prevents people who have been booted off a site from signing up again multiple times with fake email addresses. It also ensures that the webmaster can contact members or send newsletters when necessary.
