I plan on registering some new domains, however it will be hosted somewhere else.

Domain Regisration runs from $35 for the name brand sites, to $6.95 from sites I never heard of before.

Since the company is only going to register the name, and DNS and hosting will be provided by somebody I trust, is their any down side of using the $6.95 specials.

I was skeptical about going with a $6.95 registrar, including the largest, (the one about visiting my father) so I tried one that would be dormant for a while.

Not one problem. I like their tools, customer support was great, and I've since registered many, many domains through them.

I tried a couple domains at yahoo small business and slightly regret it. ( I think they had a 3.95 special at the time) Their "customer service" is by email response...the following week...and the results for me were generic. They are basically geared toward roping you into one of their small biz packages and bury the domain hosting panels very deep. But what should I expect for 3.95?

It would have been worth the extra couple bucks to have it at godaddy with my other domains.

Godaddy is the best IMO hands down of all the registrars barring none of the $35 ones. NS is about the hardest place to manage a domain at I ever encountered. Really, the basic job they all do is a database administrator, that's it besides what customer service and domain tools you get. Godaddy has excellent user friendly tools. My only gripe is when you register or renew you have to go through 3-4 no thanks... I just want just what I wanted screens to get to checkout. After that it's all good.

What happens to your domain registration if the domain register ever goes belly up?

if its a .co.uk then you can just aproach nominet and request they move your domain to another registrar.

not sure about .com's

We use GoDaddy. Never had a problem. In fact we moved all of our higher priced ones to there.

"Should I use a bargain basement Domain Register"
I'm sure you mean 'registrar'.

In a word, No. Not if your domain is personally or financially
important to you.

The bargain registrars are great for 'throw-away' domains, I'm sure.
These are great for low cost experiments etc. but that is not my case.

20 years work went into my project, long before there was an internet.
I'm not about to risk my domain name to save 12 bucks a year.

I registered with the oldest, stodgiest registrar out there and
bought up for 5 years.
In 18 months or so I will probably renew for another 5 years.
The LAST thing I want keeping me awake at night is the vague fear that
'Registy-R-Us' will belly up and leave my domain name to the wolves.
