domain name or url submission

trying to figure out something very stupid

I guess my question is somewhat ridiculous, however being new in this I am struggling to figure out what to do.
I have a domain name www.mydomain.com which is hosted on a server with url [111.111.111.111aaaaaaaaa...]

When submitting to search engines and directories do I submit the domain name or the url. Is the fact that the url is so different from my domain name will affect my results - well they are pretty poor, hardly indexed anywhere, even though I have hand-written the code for the whole site, optimised as per the big books recommendations and build up links.

I assume you are asking IP address or domain name. Your IP address may change, your domain name should not (unless you really want to change it of course). Submit the domain name.
