I have used Invision Power Board. It's free and PHP. They probably have a demo, but I haven't visited their site in a while.

I think you'll find that Invision is no longer free. The mother of all free boards is phpBB [phpbb.com] - it has the most features, but it does take some customizing. Currently on version 2.0.11, the new 3.0 release is a couple of months away. If you need a simpler setup, I like MiniBB [minibb.net] and punBB [punbb.org].

You should check the Forum Community Building [webmasterworld.com] forum for some other reviews as well as threads dealing with forum security and management.

I have used PHPBB on some of my older sites and it seems to be a pretty good script. It's very easy to set up and FREE!

Essex_Boy, I've run phpBB boards for years. If you get hung somewhere, sticky me, I'll help if I can....

Also, regardless some dreck floating around, the phpBB community fora are VERY helpful.

[Edit: for some overall useful generalist info on boards etc. as well as communities and promulgating them, you can't do better than WebmasterWorld's own Forum Community Building [webmasterworld.com] forum!]
