I'm new at this

I need an idea to start a mailing list. I'd prefer not to use a third party that will throw their banners/text ads on it. If but to collect addresses in some sort of script will work as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

docmeyer, some hosting comes with mailing list capability, but there are lots of scripts at HotScripts [hotscripts.com].

Theres quite a few at [hotscripts.com...]

We havent found what we need though. We have 4 mailing lists hosted by Yahoo Groups with around 2,500 members overall. It works very well with a minimum of text advertising in every post (they are all announcement only lists)

However we are convinced that Y! will sometime in the near future institute a charge for this (or less likely intoduce more advertising), and are looking for a replacement for when that time comes. There are many scripts of hotscripts that collect just email addresses, but we would like to keep the person's name or other fields along with it (e.g. Country) so it is a database as well. I guess this could be done with MySQL but dont have time to build an application from the ground up - simply to send out our newsletters and know the names (When the subscriber provides it) they are going to.

Any solutions other people are using or advice? I guess this is a similar question to docmeyer, but with an additional requirement!

Most hosts we know use Mailman, but again that's only email address alone. (And some actually have the nerve to charge for the use of an open source program - altering it slightly and then saying you cant run mailing lists of your own - be careful!)
