I use a site called Quick RSS Feeds. They generate code that allows a webpage to act as an RSS reader. I really like this idea.

On their home page, they now say that they are giving away their software to anyone who wants it. Now I can use the service from my own server, and not worry about a third-party stopping a service that I depend on.

So I emailed them and asked for the software, as they instructed.

They emailed me back. Apparently they do not send the software, but they want to be able to install it on my server, if I'll send them the server information...

We can install it for you just send us your server information and we'll
install it.

Have you ever heard of this? I don't want to give anyone my server info, even though it's a new site with nothing to mess up yet.

if you don't know them personally, i would err on the side of caution and not give out access to my server. something smells kinda fishy about it, imho...

Ah.... I wouldn't EVER hand over my server info to a third party without some life-or-death NEED to do so....

Bad mojo....

What a clever way to set up back doors, spambots, and other mischief.

You can't want the software THAT badly. What frauds!

Update:

I emailed them and asked if they would just send the software, and they did.

It turns out that they can't sell the software, because it's open-source, and not their own. They will soon start charging to install it, though, but for now they're doing it free. Still dangerous, since they need your password to do it.

Funny thing is, there's nothing to installing it. All you do is put it on your server, and change permissions, so the folders are writable.

I would still be extremly cautious... As previously mentioned, this has bad mojo written all over it. The software could include a whole bunch of bad stuff in it. Keep good backups and keep a close eye on your server.

Maybe try to find the original open source code and load that... Couldn't cost TOO much to customize it the way you want.
