First, he doesn't pay me enough to get into Flash (which I'd have to outsource) or to work miracles.

I was wondering if there are any new and exciting photo portfolio presentation ideas floating around out there. I'd like a NON "click the thumbnail and wait" idea. The problem with this approach as my client and I see it is that there's only one "print" on the page. So he suggested putting all the full-size photos on one page and have the user scroll sideways. Yikes!

I thought pre-loaded roll-overs may be better. Or having two "prints" side by side and the navigation be like turning the pages of a book. Does anyone have any resources in mind?

Remember...he's a cheap-skate and takes up to a year to pay me in full. In other words, I don't want to take a risk($).

I like "click the thumbnail and wait" idea. It's classic. It works. Users would not need to learn new interfaces, since this one is familiar to pretty much anyone as it's the basics of WWW.

Check out flickr, it might give you some ideas for organization. E.g. weighted lists.

Yeah. It works. But I'm dealing with an artist. Practicallity isn't really the objective. Yet we exist in the real world. See my dilema?

I've seen one horizonatal scrolling photographer's web portfolio that actually worked beautifully. Don't rule it out entirely without giving it a chance.

Photoshop has the "sideways scroll" thumbnails as an option in their templates.

It works OK. Plus you click a button and its generated automagically via batch.

if you want to see examples of sites using Photoshop templates, google for
"adobe web photo gallery"
and you get bunches, including the one that scrolls the thumbnails horizontally at the bottom with the pic centered at the top.

jalbum - nice free open source little applet, practically infinitely skinnable, pretty quick (considering this is graphics we're talking here), lots of options for display, creates indices, did I mention free....

I second the sideways scroll. I have seen some advanced graphic designers do this and if its done correctly its HOT and very unique.

Another idea....go to google and search for "simple viewer". Select the first result. Its a free unique flash application by Airtight Interactive that acts as a dynamic photo portfolio. Check it out. When I was into photography I used it on my site.
