Starting a new site concept

Making sure its not already out there

I'm currently in the process of researching for a new website project. The idea I have seems (so far) to be pretty original, I have been scouring google and directories for similar sites. There are a couple of similar ones but none doing what I have in mind.

My question is this: apart from researching directories and other sites is there any other way I can find out if anyone else is doing what I intend to? I would hate to put all this effort into building my dream site only to discover that theres an identical one already out there!

It would seem to me that if you have conducted searches for the topic and not found anything then why would you hesitate.

Even if there were another site devoted to the same topic it obviously isn't optimised for the search engines. With what you learn here on WW you should be able to create a site that will rank well.

The Internet is full of sites covering the same topic - - go for it.

It doesn't matter if that concept exsists, only if that keyword(s) is/are taken by a SEOed site.

There are a couple of similar ones but none doing what I have in mind.

If you are going to be truly unique, and you are passionate about it (you'll need that latter quality) then you'll be succesful with it.

I have been scouring google.

Bear in mind that G. has been problematic with indexing brand new sites. You'll want to check all the other engines to see what is really out there.

Thanks for the positive feedback. It looks like I have a good chance of getting high in the SERPs for the keywords I want so its a green light for this baby!
