Doorway Page?

I have a site about widgets that runs on a CMS. The CMS is very standard, frontend looks just like slashdot, PHPnuke etc...

I have a lot of content, widget stories, widget guides, etc.. etc..

I was thinking that maybe a doorway page (not a "Intro Page" or "Welcome Page") like what mozilla.org had would be awesome for showing the user all the different sections on my site.

Stupid idea?

I don't know what you mean by "doorway page" (I have seen the term used in many ways), but...

The first page that the user sees should contain information about what the site has, and links to articles, catagories of articles, etc. It should contain more than just one link, "Enter Here".

If your site is like a magazine, with articles frequently added, you might have links, with short descriptions, of the most recent articles and a link to a full table of contents.

You could have, in addition to the most recent articles, a link to Widget People, Widget Business, Widget Technology, etc. Each of those links would take the user to a full table of contents for that area.
