Expired Domain Question

Do old backlinks count?

Hi,

I have been looking at a couple of nice domain names today but have a few questions as they have been used before and abandoned.

These sites have a few important directory listings including DMOZ. Now, I read old backlinks before the domain expired are not counted by Google after the domain is bought and reused, don't know about the others...is this true?

And, if it is true, is this a permanent thing or do those backlink eventually get factored in?

I would say its a coin toss. One group in my non-commerical field disbanded.
Their domain lapsed and was snatched up by some outfit in Hong Kong.
Now same or different outfit has up a useless buy-anything portal page up.

Google result? They are right up there, listed under my keyword, as if the original
group was still active. There is not one single relevant word on the present page.

So, I'd say its a big gamble. I would sharply discount the value of
existing links to a lapsed domain in any case. -Larry
