I'm trying to start up a new content site for the purpose of building a community and generating ad revenue. I currently have access to an old PR5 domain that hasn't been update in a while.

What can I do to make best use of both domains? The content on both are related but definitely different.

So far all I've done is link the new site from the old site.

If by community you mean a forum site with which to raise money, you should do a quick search here about monetizing forums. It seems to be a difficult undertaking.

You have several choices as I see it.

1. Just update the old domain and put ads on it.

If you are worried about the time investment, go ahead and work with the old web site. Put adds on it, scrap the new idea or put it on the back burner.

2. Update the old and move forward with the new site. The two sites reference each other.

Work on both sites concurrently as partner sites. More work perhaps. But worth it in the long run. Does the old one have decent traffic? That could get the new one off it's feet.

3. Scrap the old and go with the new.

Propably a waste of a good domain so forget it.

4. Expand the old to include the new.

This is probably what I'd do. One site to manage with some page rank to work with. If they are similar enough, surely it can be done in some logical fashion. Put your ads up and go with it.

Thanks for the replies - lemme give some more info on my sites.

The old site is around 3 years old but it hasn't been updated since 2003. It has a PR of 5 and is filled with academic articles regarding Vietnam and literary works by Vietnamese.

The old site is top 10 on google for one of the keyword phrases and top 3 for another. But granted these keyword phrases are basically its domain name..its not optimized. But could be.

This new site I'm making is geared towards Vietnamese Americans and the content is more opinionated and current. So my two audiences are different but related.

I'd like to work on both to maybe turn them into sisters sites as I can't really figure out how to turn it into just one site - the material is pretty different.

Any advice as how to link the two together as sister sites?
