Hi All,

I was wondering if you guys could or would be able to give me some help. I am looking for some RDC software that I would be able to run for Workstation support but also for Server Support.

The clients will be around 10-12 hours away and so it needs to be simple for them to run but easy for us to gain access i.e doesn't require IP to connect. I was thinking of a third party server that the machines could connect through but am not having much luck finding anything.

Sorry if this is the wrong Forum but any ideas would be really helpful.

Thanks guys.

Personally I favour realvnc : [realvnc.com...] which is cross-platform and free, but it does require an IP address.

Have you considered using a dynamic DNS host to keep track of the IP's?

I don't know of a third party server you could run through and to me that smacks of security issues anyway.

Ideally you want a VNC type server that will ping you with an IP address (i.e. "register" with you) when it launches, but I don't think such an animal exists.

The only tool I was able to get through my overly aggressive corporate firewall was GoToMyPC. It's an encrypted connection and very easy to use. Setup was trivial.

If I can use one of the VNC clients my favorite is Ultr@VNC. I use that on WANs and LANs for remote access.

I use real vnc too. Ultravnc didn't handle multiple monitors very well.

Cheers for the replies.

I already use realvnc on the LAN we have in the office, which is of course great when it knows the IP addresses on the Domain or otherwise.

We need something that will get through any firewalls we might encounter and with the addresses being Dynamic we can't think of anything that would get around that problem.

OK, I think what you're saying is that the PC's on the LAN side are dynamically assigned internal LAN IP's via DHCP? So a dynamic IP host wouldn't help.

So what you need is an RDC that connects to you (acts as a client in other words).

Does the "Ask for assistance" or "Share desktop" thing in MSN work that way around? Or would MSN be a little too unprofessional?

Have you checked out Bills suggestion of GoToMyPC? I think that will work for you, as it seems to connect to their central server which you then connect to and access the remote PC (as you were originally looking for).

There may be security issues with that though.

Hi TJ,

Yes you were right about the pc's on the LAN side being assigned Dynamic IP's.

I looked at GoToMyPc but didn't think too much of the fact that they tell you nothing about the software and then to use the trial you have to give CC details which was really annoying!

I am just trying Remotely Anywhere at the moment to see what that is like.

If anyone else has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Well it seems to me it would be handy in situations like yours if the RDC server actually acted as a client, which would circumvent the firewall/IP problem.

In other words, your client launches his RDC app which connects to your central control server (where you are in control of your own firewall and port forwarding).

It would be really quite easy to take an open-source RDC app. and reverse the way it works. I'm surprised it hasn't been done.

Have you looked on Sourceforge or CNET?
