I am doing a website for a company that has lots of various courses but the guy who owns the company wants a search facility so that people can search for these courses. Sounds good but the site is in html and i have very limited programming experience to do anything about this, any ideas?

If the site and courses are indexed in google, you could use this:-

[google.com...]

Scroll down the page to "What could be better? Search me."

Beware though, Google may end up displaying ads which are in competition with your business.

You might wat to try Atomz: they used to provide a free search facility if your site was less than 500 pages. Nowadays, the free version includes advertizing, so it's far from ideal, but if you contact their support department there is apparently a $250 per year advertizing-free option which strangely does not appear on their website. It might be what you need.

There are some alternatives to Atomz, discussed here:

You could also try the Perlfect Search [perlfect.com] script - it's free to download and use, no adverts, but you've got to install the thing (as the name implies, it's a Perl script, but it shouldn't be too complicated if you carefully follow the instructions). If you get really stuck, then you'll just have to charge the client the $100 one-time fee for a professional installation.

Search google for fluid dynamics, I am pretty sure it is the best free script out there.

I happen to be fully smitten by htdig. I am constantly amazed at what this thing can do.

You need shell access to install it.

{edit - I guess I should tell you why}
It can be very easy templatized to your site design. The display files are separate from the program files using a common template method.
It's free
It's EXTREMELY powerful and configurable
