Getting newsletter subscriptions

I am in a pretty niche market and get about 300 uniques/day. I put up my newsletter (double opt-in) a day ago and haven't had a single person join it yet. I thought at least 1% or so would.

Anyone have any tips or tricks to get people to sign up (no offering $ and the signu p is very visible).

Newsletter sign ups have greatly diminished for us (and I imagine everyone), courtesy of e-mail spam. Even when people do sign up they will often use an address they rarely check and easily abandon.

If you have a good information based site you should a good amount of sign-ups. Also I would try posting the past newsletter articles (Of course you can't right now because it's so new), so the visitor knows how good the newsletter is and they have a idea of what they get.
