I have just purchased Dreamweaver after using Frontpage for a long time but have been sent the education version - can anyone tell me is this the same as the full version. Full title on box is macromedia DREAMWEAVER MX 2004 EDUCATION VERSION.

Thanks for any advice.

AFAIK, the edu version is the same as the "real" thing. It used to be in MX and I don't think they've changed that in MX2004.

However, if you've paid for the real thing and got an edu version, you better change anyway, because I think the latter has some other limitations in terms of upgrading to next version (whenever that happens), etc.

it is the same, however the licence is different, you cannot use educational software for commercial purposes, it is purely for 'learning' that is why it is so much cheaper.

If you're planning to do any commercial work with it ever, send it back and get the real version. The educational version is a complete product, but the license does not allow you to use it for commercial purposes as mentioned above.

I got the education version as it was a lot cheaper through being associated with a charity but want to use it to publish my original websites from Frontpage to the web, these sites are advertising products or services which I myself sell (nothing to do with a charity) does this mean I cannot do this with the education version - what do you mean by commercial use?

That's pretty much what it means: you can't publish commercial of any sort to the web with the edu version. The old DW 4 version I have is the edu version, was bought as such by the 501 C org for which I do site update/content/maintenance, and they are allowed to use it that way because it's non-commercial and legit non-profit.

If you teach at accredited schools, and I think (but I don't know this for sure so DON'T QUOTE ME on it!) even if you're teaching html, css, etc. at home, you can use the edu version, but for nothing remotely commercial. I'd contact DW directly to verify whether or not you need the full version.

We ordered DW for a non-profit missionary organization and got 50% off. This was over the phone with Macromedia, and we had to verify our status in writing. They were very nice, but this was about 10 months ago and they may not still do it. No restrictions and full blown version.
