Hi there people.

I am in the midst of trying to build a small scale web search engine. Basicaly i want to see if it is possible to produce a small search tool that can work in much the same way as the larger se's and basicaly become a mini google or altavista. My aim with this project is to have fun and try and make it as profesional as possible with regular spidering, monthly updates, and payed listings (exept there free) you just pretend you pay them. I just want to have a bit of fun an see what is possible on a budget of "zero"

The idea behind the "free payed listing" is simply that you can add your url as normal with any search engine i want to copy altavista and offer "premier listigs" basicaly they will still be free it's just to make the project more realistic by making the webmaster fill out a form and go through the payed listing procedure (exept the payment) it's just for fun but does anyone have any more ideas??????????

i'm open to any:)

Hey Mack,

How did this sweet little post get by me? It really pays to check for orphan posts and I’m sorry to see yours was neglected for this long, wow.

So I guess I would have to start with questions here. First, have you moved any further along since this post in October? Are you developing your own search engine, using or modifying someone else’s or what?

I’m interested in this topic myself and wonder if the problem is those who know don’t want to share, hahaha.

Let’s see what a little bump of this thread will bring. Maybe there are a few out there getting bored with all the Google talk. ;)

If I pretend to SPAM and get caught, is there a pretend PRO penalty? ;)

mack, have you seen the Gigablast threads? [webmasterworld.com]. Matt Wells is building his own, I'm sure he's got some wise words to share like "Don't announce it on WebmasterWorld until it's ready" ;)

I think one of the more interesting questions is

How to make money from your own directory? is charging the best way forward and will people pay?

Hi everyone. Ok I have started getting this project up and going, I have a small scale web directory and built a small scale se as a back up search for when no results are found. The entire aim of this project was to see what could be done on a budget of Zero. so far all i have had to do was buy the domain name. It will never be a full search engine because of the limitations of webspace and software but i am interested to see just what can be done with what I have. So far i have built a main page where you can do a search the results pages provide the results and also a wee feature i have borowed from google "web, directory" alowing you to toggle between results. It is all very basic but as i said it is all for fun. The "free" paid listing is about to be set up and as for "pretending to spamm" i will just "pretend" to give a pr0 :) seriously though if you add your site yu will be crawled. The index will update near the 28th of each month and the payed listing will be available "free" real soon.
