Mysterious Password File

I'm fairly new to web building and I'm currently trying to install a password protected area on my site.

My host supports this feature and I created the .htaccess file in the folder I wanted. I then added one user name and password and submitted it.

But I then got a list of 10 other user names and passwords that I didn't create!

Anyone have any idea how they could have got there and how to get rid of them?

"Successfully updated htpassword file
Filename: /usr/local/etc/htpasswd/controlpanel"
Users in file:
bill
bob
bert
boris
<snip>
etc...

this could be because this is a shared hosting and there are 9 other websites on the server....?

did these users apear right after you created this file or some time passed?
